Impressions of the sea concerts

Sally Beamish’s audacious reworking of Debussy’s La Mer is the centrepiece of these concerts. It’s an astounding piece of transcription that brings all the colours and textures of a full symphony orchestra to the intimacy of a piano trio.

In a programme linked together by the swirling textures and evocative melodies of impressionism, this transformative adaptation of La Mer is the perfect partner to Ravel’s magnificent Piano Trio, a work Ravel claimed to have written ‘with the sureness and lucidity of a madman’

Takemitsu’s Between Tides completes the programme, its undulating rhythms and intricate harmonic soundworld blending the pictorialism of Debussy with the mysticism of Messiaen.

At Catstrand in New Galloway, we will also be performing Messiaen’s hypnotic Louange à l’Éternité de Jésus, a work that plays with the biblical idea that ‘there should be time no longer’.

Live Streaming

No concerts in your area? Can’t make it to the concert hall? Then why not join us online via hebridesensemble.com?

As part of our pioneering new digital strategy, we will be live streaming our piano trio programme (see above) from Perth Concert Hall on 7th March at 7.30pm, and we are inviting you to join us through #HebridesatHome. Invite your friends round and enjoy hearing Hebrides from the comfort of your own sofa, saving you both the journey and the cost of a ticket.

We want to know what you think about the experience of hearing and seeing live performance via the Internet. What are the benefits? Is the sound good enough? What do you miss? We are developing a research project which will help us understand more fully, the audience experience when watching in your own own home, on the bus or wherever else you might be. If you watch the streaming, simply fill in a questionnaire when it’s finished and we will publish the results later in the spring.
