East West – March 2017 Concert Tour

Join us as we navigate between continents and traverse more than 80 years of history while exploring the diverse repertoire for clarinet, cello and piano of the twentieth century. From Kenneth Leighton’s reimagining of the moving American hymn tune At the River, to Debussy’s elegiac Rhapsodie for clarinet and piano, a melancholic thread weaves through this truly international programme, peaking in the extraordinary soundworld of Isang Yun. Originally from Korea, Yun endured kidnap and imprisonment, and narrowly avoided the death sentence, before building a career for himself in Germany. His Espace I for cello and piano mixes the rich vocabulary of Asian traditional music with echoes from his time spent studying in France. Poulenc’s fun-filled Trio ends the programme on a lighter note with its irresistible blend of wit and melodicism.
