Hebrides Ensemble & Max

A poignant concert in memory of Peter Maxwell Davies, the founder of the St Magnus International Festival, and a great friend of Hebrides Ensemble. The programme explores Max’s characteristic re-workings of Renaissance music in his Fantassie, Piano Trio and Renaissance Dances. We pay tribute to Shakespeare’s anniversary with Thomas Adès’ Court Studies from his large-scale opera The Tempest, whilst Messiaen’s early work was a celebratory piece written for his first wife. As part of the festival’s 40 première season, we will also give the first performance of Midsummer Sunrise by John Gourlay.

This concert will be recorded for future broadcast on BBC Radio 3.
