Trainee Artistic Directors appointed

21 September 2017

As part of our recently launched Hebrides Academy, we’re delighted to introduce our two Trainee Artistic Directors, Ben Lunn and Davide Levi. Hebrides Academy provides support and professional opportunities for those entering the music industry and we’re excited to have Ben and Davide join the Hebrides team.

Ben Lunn is a composer, conductor, and musicologist. As a composer, he has worked with leading ensembles and soloists across Europe including ÖeNM, Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra, Sofia Soloists, Rolf Hind, Tianyi Lu, Music Theatre Wales, and N.A.M.E.S. ensemble. As musicologist, his research has focused on the Baltic, the Romanian composer Horaţiu Rădulescu, and composition and disability. He has been published in multiple languages and has given lectures across the world including Fordham University, Mozarteum, Bangor University, and Komitas Conservatory. He writes weekly on his blog Baltic Music Gems, and has contributed to other online platforms including Van Music Magazine.

His work as a conductor has led him to produce extremely curious concerts, mostly by introducing brand new, or unknown repertoire to new audiences. Within this role he has had the privilege to commission and premiere composers across Europe and Eurasia including Justina Repečkaitė, Maja Palser, Jachin Pousson, Harriet Grainger, and Karolina Kapustaite. His fascination with finding new and interesting repertoire is one of the main driving forces behind his growing work as a concert and festival organiser; and future projects include events in Kazakhstan, Scotland, and Armenia.

Davide Levi is an Italian conductor and composer. Trained at the Conservatorio G. Verdi in Milan, Italy, Davide has worked with some of the finest orchestras in Italy, Germany and the UK, including the Orchestra I Pomeriggi Musicali, Orchestra La Verdi, and the Jenaer Philharmonie. Since 2014, he regularly works as a cover and assistant conductor for the Royal Ballet, where he has had the chance to work with conductors such as Koen Kessels, Boris Gruzin and Tom Seligman.

Davide has a passion for opera and has worked as assistant conductor on many productions. In 2016, he conducted Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana and Rossini’s La Cambiale di Matrimonio at the Teatro Mancinelli in Orvieto, Italy. In 2017, he was the recipient of the Jerwood Performing Arts Bursary to undertake further training in opera coaching. In 2016, he was one of the two Pettman DARE Fellows at Opera North and University of Leeds, where he had the opportunity to devise Opera North’s first, highly acclaimed Orchestra Camp.
